Meet the Staff

Celia Yu, School Secretary

Dear Families and Guardians,

Hello! My name is Celia Yu and I’m going to be your new secretary at CIS. I have been hearing a lot of great things about the school, the staff and I’m so excited that I will be part of this amazing team.

I immigrated to the U.S when I was a teenager and I am able to speak and write fluently in both Cantonese and Mandarin. I have been working with children since my early college life, with experience in different school settings and children from different age groups, such as Chinese School, tutoring and babysitting. After completing my bachelor degree in Child & Adolescent Development and minor in Special Education, I worked as a preschool teacher for more than 10 years. It is exciting to meet some of my past students from preschool who are now studying in CIS. I always have a passion in working with children and their families. I enjoy seeing them grow day by day and it is the most precious thing in my life.

I look forward to working with the CIS team and to serve the students and their families. I can’t wait to meet everyone.

Karen Tai, nurse/counselor

It has been a privilege and one of the most rewarding experiences of my career to work at Chinese Immersion School.  We have grown from 80 students in 2009 to now almost 400 students.  I cannot believe we will be celebrating our ten-year anniversary next year!  I feel that I was one of the fortunate ones to be part of its inception.  It seems like only yesterday that I first started at CIS; my daughter was then in Menlo high school and now she is in her last year of law school at Stanford.

I look forward coming to school every day to work with children and their families, as well as our principal, teachers and staff in supporting physical health and social-emotional wellness in the classrooms and school-wide activities.  I am deeply grateful for the generosity of CIS parents’ fundraising in complementing the District’s funding so that the school could expand my role to a full-time position six years ago.  It requires a partnership of the school and the family to raise and nurture a child.  It is thus my hope that every one of our students will be physically, emotionally, socially and academically prepared when they leave CIS.  It truly takes a village!  During my school years, my teachers and the dedicated staff were some of my greatest mentors.

Like some of our staff, I was born in Hong Kong. I then immigrated to Canada, where I received my first nursing degree from McMaster University, before settling here in the Bay Area. I have always been passionate about working with diverse communities and their children, through first working in the public health department and the inner city schools in Toronto.  This experience inspired me to further my education in public health and later obtain a school nurse credential in California.

In my spare time, my husband and I, even my daughter enjoy traveling and trying different cuisines, especially new seafood dishes.  My goal is to one day reach all seven continents!

I am honored and excited to be part of this community dedicated to the educational success and overall well-being of your child.  I welcome open communication with parents; please feel free to leave me a message in my mailbox at the school or contact me through the district email.
