2nd Grade

Amy Chow, 2nd Grade Teacher

I love children and enjoy spending time with the energetic little ones. They are so very pure and innocent. My heart overflows with joy when I see children who speak more than one language. Their talents and learning capability amazes me!

I was born in Hong Kong. At the age of 10, my family and I immigrated to San Francisco, California. Due to the length of time I have spent in the US, many people suspect that I am a “half-ABC” (American Born Chinese). I would not disagree, especially on the cultural levels. Growing up, I was surrounded by other native Chinese speakers and did not meet my first native English speaking friend until college. It was such an asset to grow up with so many other Chinese speakers who continually helped me to improve my spoken and written Chinese. In my leisure, I like to travel, do jigsaw puzzles, and spend time with friends and family. I spend most of my weekends at church where I serve joyfully. I have a BA in Liberal Studies and received a Bilingual Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. My passion lies in working with children. Prior to joining the Chinese Immersion School, I worked as a Children’s Ministry Director and as a Chinese Bilingual teacher in SFUSD. I am now very eager to begin my work at Chinese Immersion School and am ready for a fruitful school year!

May Lin Hy, 2nd Grade Teacher

I am the youngest of four and was born and raised in San Francisco. I went to Daniel Webster Elementary School, Francisco Middle School and Galileo Academy of Science and Technolo- gy. Furthermore, I went to Central Chinese High School in America five days a week right after regular school. I attended the University of California, Davis and graduated with a BA in Human Development as well as a minor in Education.

I have a passion for teaching and have always wanted to educate young students. I have worked with infants, toddlers and preschool children. I had the wonderful opportunity to work in West Portal Elementary School’s GLO program and as an intern at West Portal Elementary School’s Chinese Immersion Program where I was able to learn and gain many valuable lessons.

I enjoy watching Korean shows and am really interested in the Korean culture. I like to learn to new languages. In my free time I like staying at home, listening to music, watching television and relaxing!

Janet Yu, 2nd Grade Teacher

Hi, my name is Janet Yu and I am very happy to be at Chinese Immersion School to teach Cantonese.  I believe being bilingual will help the children in their future aspirations. I was born and raised in San Francisco and my mother insisted that I go to Chinese school. I’m glad she did because now I love learning languages. In college I double majored in Human Development and Mandarin. Now I can speak three dialects of Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and Toysan). Before becoming a teacher I worked in after school programs and found myself enjoying the creativity behind teaching and creating lesson plans that were meaningful and fun. I especially enjoy teaching reading and writing. That passion has only grown since then. I hope to continue to make a difference in students’ lives and help them love learning as much as much as I love teaching.
