Math Online Resources

5.2 Technology Resources

Students can investigate different forms of place value notation using the place value tool at ConceptuaMath.com.

This Zoomable Number Line in Mathisfun.com allows students to explore numbers between numbers.

Number Pieces, and app from the Math Learning Center, helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

5.3 Technology Resources

Fraction Game: This applet allows students to individually practice working with equivalent fractions and ways of combining fractions.

Equivalent Fractions: Students create equivalent fractions by dividing and shading squares or circles, and match each fraction to its location on the number line.

Conceptua Math provides online dynamic manipulatives to aid student learning of fractions, multiplication, and division. The manipulatives support students in creating and connecting representations of fractions and operations.

The Math Learning Center provides a number of web/ipad apps that could be useful in this unit:

Number Pieces helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

The Fractions app lets students use a bar or circle to represent, compare, and perform operations with fractions with denominators from 1 to 100. Students can choose the fraction model and number of equal parts, use a color to select specific parts to show a fraction of the whole, reveal or hide numeric labels as needed, and superimpose fractions upon each other to compare fractions or see equal parts.

Number Line helps students visualize number sequences and illustrate strategies for counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. They can choose number lines labelled with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, or negative numbers.

FogStoneIsle.com is a free game that gives students practice with fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Find out more about this game here: What Neuroscience Can Tell Us About Making Fractions Stick.

If you do not have Fraction Circles, you can reproduce the following on card stock for students: Fraction Circles. It’s best to reproduce each fraction on a different color.

5.7 Dividing Fractions

Using number line

This video shows how to multiply fractions using number line.

This video shows how to multiply mixed numbers using an area model.

5.8

online isometric drawing tool

This activity from NCTM: gives students the opportunity to explore rectangular prisms in space by filling them with cubes, rows, or layers.
